CPU (Central processing unit)
The main operating part of a *computer; it includes the control unit (CU) and the arithmetic/ logic unit (see alu). Its function is to fetch instructions from memory, decode them, and execute the program. It also provides timing signals. An *integrated circuit that has a complete CPU on a single silicon chip is called a microprocessor. [1]
